Bloodflowers

Bloodflowers

To produce cosmetically perfect blooms for export to the U.S. and Europe, Columbia's 80,000 flower industry workers, mostly women, perform long hours of physically grueling and hazardous labor.

Pollinators

Pollinators

Pollinators— most often bees, butterflies, birds, and bats are critical to fruit and seed production. The pesticide Imidacloprid is believed to be one of the main causes for Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) amongst bees.

Another highlight on my annual Mid West trip is the Wandell Sculpture Garden at Meadowbrook Park, which is operated by the Urbana Park District.

I met with the Executive Park Director, Vickie Mayes,  to do some research for the Arts Council of Fairfax County, on how they established the sculpture garden. Founded in the early 90's through the vision of  Robin Hall, it is an amazing example, on what you can do with limited staff and financial resources. I love the concept of natural habitat (prairie grass land), gardening, recreational activities and contemporary art. It's worth checking out if you happen to be in the area. They have over 20 temporary and permanent installations and sculptures on display.

Whenever I go to Urbana, Il, I make sure to stop by the Krannert Art Museum, located on the University of Illinois campus. This time around I felt myself in awe, when standing in front of the incredible Japanese paper (washi) murals of Kyoko Ibe. His work reminds me of the subtle murals in Rothko's Chapel, Houston, TX, but with an added warmth of the pigmented and sculpted paper structure and surface. His use of color and composition is beautiful and very elegant.  See for yourself.
