Shepard Fairey's Portrait of Barack Obama was purchased by The National Portrait Gallery through a generous gift of Tony and Heather Podesta. Will it raise to the fame of Andy Warhol's Marilyn Monroe one day? Shepard certainly nailed the timing exactly right and he has already participated in a little piece of amazing history.
I went to Irvine Contemporary last year and saw the 3 man show, in which Shepard Fairey's work was presented. Very strong and powerful art work. His other two colleagues in the show were Al Farrow, Paul D. Miller (DJ Spooky). Needless to say that Al Farrow's incredible sculptures made out of metal pieces and scraps, consisting of mostly guns and ammunition BLEW ME AWAY!
On another note:
Let's hope Mr. Obama and his administration does not forget their promises and we will see a fast pull-out of Iraq, soon! And speaking of politics. What about supporting a secretary of culture. Let art speak and not bombs. We certainly had enough of that in the past 5 years.
