To produce cosmetically perfect blooms for export to the U.S. and Europe, Columbia's 80,000 flower industry workers, mostly women, perform long hours of physically grueling and hazardous labor.

Pollinators

Pollinators— most often bees, butterflies, birds, and bats are critical to fruit and seed production. The pesticide Imidacloprid is believed to be one of the main causes for Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) amongst bees.

The print series Flores Muertas depicts the issue of where our flowers come from, what kind of hidden real costs and dangers lie behind them and questions global capitalism as a real danger to people and the environment.

Murcielago Santo

The crucified skeleton bat is a reminder to us, that human induced environmental hazards will most likely cause many species to go extinct.

Public Altar by artist Andrea Collins. Anyone can place ofrendas throughout the event.

Ofrenda Parade

7 pm - 7:45 pm Join us at the historic Market Square near City Hall at 301 King Street. The Ofrenda Parade will start at 7:00pm and end at the Torpedo Factory Art Center. Look for the drummers at Market Square. Come in your costumes, bring puppets, shrines, and noise makers. FREE and Open to Anyone! Contact us at ofrendaparade@artoutlet.org for more information.

Masked Ball

7:30 pm- midnight, No Cover, Cash Bar
Revelers are invited to come to the Ofrenda reception and Maksed Ball dressed Day of the Dead style or decked out in Halloween finery. An artist-led sugar skull activity and Mariachi performance by Mariachi Estrellas will kick off the celebration from 3 to 4pm. Live music including rock, swing, and blues will be interspersed with belly dancing and aearial silks trapeze performances throughout the event. Guests can participate in the exhibition by bringing personal remembrances – ofrendas – to contribute to the artist-made public altar honoring those who have left us.
