So you want to know about me?
Well, if I only knew…! Ok, seriously now. All right then. Well, like
most artists I battle two jobs, not like most artists I want to be a reggae
and dub DJ but am far away yet from that goal. But never say never! I am currently
practicing my Jamaican German Swedish tung. How does "Swedish Scratch" sound
to you? Ever been to Jammyland? Ahh,
ok, art… In 1992, I started working in a printshop with
Hubert Gems, who was nice fellow artist -- the old school abstract avant-garde.
Very open minded and friendly. I decided printmaking it should be, not knowing
yet how hard that is. Well, I came to the US a little more than 10 years ago.
Has it been that long?
I arrived at the shores of the Gulf with long pants, a sweater and boots -- facing the immediate challenge of 80% humidity and 98 degrees Fahrenheit. After diving into my graphic design studies in Mannheim, Germany I felt ready to conquer the world. Hmmm. at least it seemed like that? In Houston TX, I met Luis Jimenez. Admiring his drawing style, I decided to polish up my drawing skills before continuing my studies in printmaking. My wife Mikaila and I visited the Jimenez family on several occasions and we even went to the Roswell Artist Compound, where he had been working for several years before renovating his Mountain Apple 'Castle.'
Shows in Houston … Ahhh, I loved those old empty warehouses. So many and absolutely no bureaucracy involved. We had many events there and it was fun times. Have you ever seen the Art Car Museum or Orange Show for Visionary Art Museum? Oh, did I tell you that I ran accross Robert Rauschenberg, while skating down Montrose Avenue. We had a one minute chat and off we were on different paths. Mikaila and I lived in the museum district and were frequent visitors of the Menil Collection, Rothko Chapel and Byzantine Chapel. On Monday nights we enjoyed DJ Sun at Cafe Brasil and inbetween we hung out at the Empire Cafe. Fun stuff.
In between all that, I happened to spend 3 years in Tucson, AZ. Boy, you gotta love those little burrito stands in south Tucson. I never really quite made it into the art scene of Tucson. Maybe the time wasn't right for me or I wasn't ready yet? If you have never been, walk over to Club Congress, wander over to Solar Culture to check out Steven Eye's amazing art or see a band, go to the Mat Bevel Institute for some cutting edge performance art, walk the All Souls Procession in November and have a Margarita at Barrio Grill.
Washington, DC -- the nation's capitol! Wohooo, what better times to live here than now? With world history being written, it sure has been an interesting 5 years, I have to say.
Highlights in Washington DC has been the free art museums with the Sackler and Freer Gallery being one of my favorites. Ahhhh subculture… can't forget to mention Artomatic. In between all that, I founded my own art group Art Outlet. 2006 proved to be a hectic year. Our house suffered a fire -- I call it the Kenmore Fire now, but luckily I was home and prevented the fire from destroying my art studio. As a result, I am currently looking for studio space. Anyone out there who can help? To prevent me from going crazy, I am hanging out with Penny at Discover Graphics and create prints… ahh and Nancy McIntyre --- an amazing artist. She is giving me some studio space, so that I can keep on printing my silkscreen work. I am loving it. Doing a second edition of 'Corporate God' in color, where I go crazy experimenting with different techniques. It's March now and still working on it… I will post it when I am done with the print. Most likely, it will take me another 6-8 weeks.
